Capcom celebrates the news in its announcement, saying, “With the January 2018 release of Monster Hunter: World in particular, Capcom was able to propel the Monster Hunter series to global-brand status with a series-first worldwide simultaneous launch coupled with international promotional activities, establishing the game as Capcom’s best-selling title of all time within a month of its release and being honoured with awards the world over.” On its list of Platinum Titles (which gives figures from June 2021), Capcom shows that Monster Hunter: World sits at the top of the list, while Resident Evil 7 comes in second with 9.8 million units shipped.
The devs move on to the impact that the release of the Iceborne expansion had, adding, “In the more than three years since the game’s release, in addition to promoting digital sales, Capcom also launched Monster Hunter World: Iceborne… a massive premium expansion for the game, as well as a bundle containing both titles, capitalizing on synergies with Iceborne and resulting in prolonged sales that led Monster Hunter: World to achieve a Capcom all-time record of 20 million units shipped.”
Capcom does mention plans to “further grow user base with proactive expansion of the series overall” — at the moment, this seems to refer to the Sunbreak expansion for Monster Hunter Rise, which is available on Nintendo Switch and will be available for PC next year.
